Q: Who do we serve at Family Promise?

A: The homeless.

Who are the homeless?

People just like you. They work, pay their bills, their mortgage or rent, until something unexpected or disastrous happens. Suddenly, they find themselves without enough money to cover those bills. Given the high cost of living and the lack of affordable housing in our region, families sometimes lose their homes and are often too embarrassed to ask for help.

We serve both single and dual-parent families. Homelessness disrupts virtually every aspect of our guests’ family life, occasionally damaging the physical and/or emotional health of all family members. It interferes with children’s education and development, and frequently results in the separation of family members. It can be a devastating experience.

Statistics

Families now make up 40% of the homeless population and one out of every four homeless individuals is a child! Unfortunately, families are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population.

The number of classified homeless children in Humble ISD exceeded 550 in 2008. There are many more who are “hidden homeless,” staying with family or friends, that are not recognized in that number. And this is only one school district that we serve in our community.

Together, we will work toward ending homelessness in our community.
